This is because the program has been designed to apply the characteristics of effective health education curricula and provide the functional knowledge, build the health-literacy skills, and shape the healthy norms that directly relate to key healthy behavior outcomes. It’s important that the information conveyed and the skills being practiced connect to and fulfill the lesson objectives, which come from the knowledge and skill expectations defined in the CDC’s HECAT (Health Education Curriculum Analysis Tool) as essential to the practice of healthy behaviors in the different content areas. Similar to keeping fidelity to the research base when delivering an evidence-based program, HealthSmart instruction may seem more defined or rigid because of this, but it is intended to build the knowledge and skills that will improve specific health outcomes for students.
