Using the PDF version of HealthSmart student resources

Learn how teachers and students can use PDF versions of HealthSmart student resources

This article provides a walk-through on how teachers can create an assignment in Google Classroom using the PDF version of HealthSmart student resources, and how students can submit their work using the PDF worksheets.

In this article you can find step-by-step instructions on the following topics:


Using a fillable PDF worksheet:

  1. Click either the “Preview English” or "Preview Spanish" link under the name of the Student Resource.

  2. The resource will open in a new tab or window. To download the PDF, look in the upper right corner of your browser and click the save or download arrow button. You will be prompted to save the file on your device. In the following example, the worksheet has been opened in Chrome:
  3. The PDF worksheet will open using your device's PDF software where you can type in the fillable or interactive fields. 

  4. Note: some devices come with default PDF software, but if your device does not have PDF software or has trouble reading fillable PDFs, please use Adobe Reader which is available for free to install on any device:

    1. iOS users (e.g. MacBook, iPad, etc.): 
      Windows users (e.g. Chromebook, Android tablet, etc.)
  5. Once you have filled in all the required fields, click Save in your PDF software to save the file with your responses. The completed PDF can then be emailed, saved to cloud storage, or uploaded to an online course.

📑Note: the HealthSmart student resource PDFs are protected files that cannot be fully edited due to copyright.

Getting Started

Please use the fillable PDFs with Adobe Reader.


iOS users (e.g. MacBook, iPad, etc.): 
Windows users (e.g. Chromebook, Android tablet, etc.)
  1. Open up your Google Classroom.
  2. Click the Classwork tab.

  3. Click the Create button and select “Assignment” from the drop-down menu.

  4. Give your assignment a name by typing it into the “Title” field. You can add instructions by entering them into the “Instructions (optional)” field.

  5. Click the Add button and select “File” from the drop-down menu.

  6. Click the Upload tab.

  7. Click the Browse button to upload the fillable Student Workbook PDF that you downloaded to your computer from the HealthSmart lessons on the ETR website.

  8. Navigate to the file, select it, and click Open.

  9. You will see the file now added to the assignment.

  10. Click the Permissions drop-down menu for the file, select “Make a copy for each student”. Note: This will append the student’s name to beginning of the PDF filename when the students download it.

  11. Adjust the details for “Points”, “Due”, “Topic”, etc as needed.

  12. Tip: You can create the same assignment for multiple classes. Under the "For" field on the right-side of the page, check the boxes for the courses where you want to assign the HealthSmart worksheet.
  13. Click the Assign button.

  14. Now you should see your Student Workbook listed as a resource in the Classwork tab.

Getting Started

  1. Open up your Google Classroom.
  2. Click the Classwork tab.

  3. Click on the assignment that you want to fill out and submit to expand the view.

  5. From the “Your Work” block on the right-hand side of the screen, click on the
    PDF that is associated with that assignment.

  6. Once the PDF opens, click the More actions button and select “Open in a new
    window” from the drop-down menu.

  7. To edit the PDF select the new window with the PDF and click the Print button.
    This will open the PDF in a new tab.

  8. Select the new tab with the editable PDF and answer the questions.

  9. Once you have answered all of the questions in the PDF for the assignment, click
    the Print button again.

  10. From the print dialogue box, choose “Save as PDF” from the “Destination” dropdown menu. Then click the Save button.

  11. This will open up the “Save file as” dialogue box. Add your name to the
    beginning of the file name and then hit Save button again.

  12. Close all of the extra PDF windows and go back to your Google Classroom.
  13. Upload the edited PDF that you saved by clicking the Add or create button.

  14. Click the Upload tab.

  15. Click the Browse button to upload the fillable Student Workbook PDF that you
    downloaded to your computer from the HealthSmart lessons on the ETR
    website.

  16. Navigate to the file, select it, and click Open.

  17. Now you should see the file your uploaded in the “Your work” block. Note: You
    can remove the original PDF file by clicking the “x” next to the file name.

  18. Click the Turn in button to complete the assignment.

  19. Click the Turn in button in the confirmation window. You’re assignment is now
    submitted! Note: If you need to, you can un-submit your assignment by clicking the
    Un-submit button underneath the PDF in the “Your work” block and start over.
